Hi and happy Friday!
Before we get into what we’ve been working on this past week, here are some important dates to note:
September 29th – D4D at Lou Malnati’s in Western Springs 4pm – 10pm
September 30th – School pictures
October 3rd – Pet Blessing 2pm
October 9th – 2pm Dismissal
October 9th – Little Cardinal event in the Courtyard 2pm
October 12th – No School
Now, what has been going on in Room 119? I am glad you asked!
English Language Arts: All grades have been working so hard on the Argument Essay projects. Next week, we will focus on researching rebuttals and finalizing conclusions. I hope to have the first drafts done by next Friday, with final drafts turned in the next week. I am impressed by the variety of topics that the students have chosen, and I look forward to reading their arguments. There will be a Vocabulary Test on Unit 4 next week (10/2). I am moving the tests to be every two weeks, to give everyone more time to study and understand the words. Every day, we warm up by using one of our vocabulary words in a sentence. Then, we label nouns, verbs, and adjectives. In class, I am noticing that students are integrating the vocabulary words into written work and in conversations, which is so impressive!! Two words that have made their marks are famished and dissuade.
6th Homeroom Literature: We are about halfway through Wonder! So far, we’ve read Auggie’s, Summer’s, and Jack’s points of view in the story and we’ve analyzed what each section adds to the whole story. We’ve had wonderful conversations on different perspectives, sense of belonging, and treating people fairly while acknowledging differences.
A quick note on reading logs: These are due on the last day of each school week. They are worth 5 points each. I ask that each student sets a weekly page goal, rather than a time goal. Students must write at least one sentence about the books they’ve read as well.
Homework: As a reminder, I follow the Student Handbook’s policy on late work. Additionally, extracurricular activities such as sports or clubs are not excuses for missing work. Thank you for understanding.
