This Week:
What’s due:
- Picture Day: Be sure to turn that in online; no paper forms, all online.
- Name Writing Pages: I gave you name writing practice pages a couple of weeks ago. Remember, over the next month or so, pull a page out and have your child practice. Turn it in for a smelly sticker. Keep doing that until you’ve completed all those practice pages.
- House Page: I’d like to start sending the traveling “house book” home with kids next week. If you need the extra weekend, no worries, send it in on Monday. Please reach out if you need an extra copy of the house.

Next Week:
Language Arts:
- Here are the Fundations letter/keyword/sounds we have learned so far in unit 1. Remember, we are focus on LOWERCASE formation ONLY, and want students to be able to name the letters and sounds in the “letter/keyword/sound” format as shown below:
t/top/t
b/bat/b
f/fun/f
n/nut/n
i/itch/i
u/up/u
c/cat/c
o/octopus/o
a/apple/a
Next week I will introduce:
g/game/g, d/dog/d, s/snake/s
Here is a video of what the letter/key/sound drill practice sounds like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AYhKyXCs7Ug
- Journaling: We will continue to practice journaling focusing on the following skills: writing words with pencil, drawing detailed pictures with crayons and using lowercase letters only.
- Shared writing: We will continue shared writing. Each child will be called up to the front and will have a chance to help me write a short “story” following this format: My name is–, I am — years old, I like —, I do not like —-. During shared writing we will practice the following skills: stretching words/writing the sounds we hear, writing word wall words, filling in missing sounds, remembering ‘finger spaces’ in between words, and understanding letters make up words and words make up sentences. So far I’ve learned we have kids that LIKE Harry Potter, hamsters, puppies and pizza and kids who do NOT like cheeseburgers, storms, soup and ladybugs. 🙂
- Fundations printing: We are into our second Fundations printing packet. Again, we are ONLY focusing on lowercase letters right now. It’s really hard to get kids out of the habit of writing in all capital letters, so we try right from the start to only write with lowercase letters and Fundations gives the kids the skills and confidence to write those letters.
- Birthdays: Be sure to help your child practice reciting his/her birthday!
- Word wall words: Current word wall words: no, yes, the, I, go, we will. Next week I will introduce SEE. We will practice both reading and writing these words. See if your child can show you some of these when you’re reading at home!
Math:
Next week we will wrap up our first “Into Math” workbook which had us focusing on numbers up to 5. We will be starting our second workbook, which will be all about representing numbers 6-10 with objects, representing 6-10 with a written numeral and comparing numbers to 10. In addition to this, we will continue to work on the following math skills all month long:
- Number writing: Writing numbers correctly using the Fundations lines. Remember, backwards numbers will still happen and are completely developmentally appropriate.
- Tally Marks: We will use tally marks to represent numbers and show “tens” and “ones.”
- Ten Frames: We will use a double ten frame to represent teen numbers and show “tens” and “ones.”
- Counting: We will continue to practice counting by 1s to 30. At Home: Keep practicing that counting! You say a number, they say a number, go back and forth. The car is a great place to do this! The expectation is up to 100 by the END of kindergarten.
- Graphing: We will create and interpret graphs–bar graphs and tally graphs.
- Greater than/less than/Equal to: We will use the following symbols to compare numbers: >, <, =
Religion:
- We will continue to attend 8am Mass on Tuesdays. You would have been SO proud of how all the kids did at church this past week. They were awesome! So prayerful! We will keep practicing folded hands, genuflecting and trying to participate in some of the prayers and songs.
- Next week will be all about BAPTISM! We became a part of a bigger family, the church family when we were baptized! We will visit the baptismal font at our church. Next week will be a show and tell opportunity. I am asking BOYS to please bring in a baptism memento on Thursday, October 1. GIRLS bring in a baptism memento on Friday, October 2. This could be a picture, invitation, candle, part of the outfit, etc. If your child wasn’t baptized, no worries, just send in any special item that reminds them to keep God close! Please talk to your child about the following things:
1.) Who are your child’s Godparents?
2.) What did your child wear?
3.) Who came to the celebration? What did the celebration look like?
4.) Why was everyone so happy at the celebration?
5.) Did your child sleep, cry, smile, etc.
