Next Week:

Next week is our field trip! It will be a regular snack and lunch day.  Please make sure your child dresses for the weather.  Do NOT send your child with extra money.  The money needed was included in the $10 fee you submitted.  The day before we leave, a representative from the farmer’s market, Tidey Farms, will be coming to talk to us about fruits and vegetables. We can’t wait!

Language Arts:

  • Here are the Fundations letter/keyword/sounds we have learned so far in unit 1.  The kids’ confidence has grown so much and is seen in how automatic they are when producing letter names and sounds. We want students to produce sounds automatically (less than 2 seconds to make sound) so that the upcoming skill of blending is much easier.  If it takes a child too long to produce a sound, the skill of putting sounds together to read words becomes much more difficult. They are doing AWESOME. Mrs. Zontos and I were just commenting on how confident they’ve ALL become these past few weeks during our Fundations time. So exciting!

  • Journaling:  We will continue to practice journaling focusing on the following skills: writing words with pencil, drawing detailed pictures with crayons and using lowercase letters only.
  • Shared writing:  We will continue shared writing.  Each child will be called up to the front and will have a chance to help me write a short “story” following this format: My name is–, I am — years old, I like —, I do not like —-.
  • Fundations printing: We will keep practicing letter formation using the sky, plane, grass and worm lines.
  • Word wall words: Current word wall words: no, yes, the, I, go, we, will, see, is.  Next week I will introduce TO. We will practice both reading and writing these words.  See if your child can show you some of these when you’re reading at home!

Math:

We started our second math workbook which is all about representing numbers 6-10 with objects, representing 6-10 with a written numeral and comparing numbers to 10. In addition to this, we will continue to work on the following math skills all month long:

  • Number writing: Writing numbers correctly using the Fundations lines.  Remember, backwards numbers will still happen and are completely developmentally appropriate.
  • Tally Marks: We will use tally marks to represent numbers and show “tens” and “ones.”
  • Base Ten blocks: We are now using base 10 blocks to represent numbers greater than 10.

What Are Base Ten Blocks? Explained For Elementary Schools

  • Ten Frames: We will use a double ten frame to represent teen numbers and show “tens” and “ones.”
  • Counting: We will continue to practice counting by 1s to 40.
  • Graphing: We will create and interpret graphs; we have now created and interpreted both bar and tally graphs.  We are able to count to answer how many are in each category.  We will start to work on COMPARING numbers and answering questions like, “if red apples has 6 votes and green apples has 3, how many more votes were there for red apples compared to green?”  Boy, is that tricky! When your child comes home with a tally or bar graph, take a moment to have your child explain the results to you! It’s a great opportunity to practice math vocabulary.
  • Greater than/less than/equal to: We will use the following symbols to compare numbers: >, <, =

Religion/Science:

  • We will continue to attend 8am Mass on Tuesdays.
  • Next week will begin our units of FEELINGS.  God cares how we feel–when we are happy, sad, angry. He always cares and asks US to care about how others are feeling too!  We will begin our social emotional program called SECOND STEP next week. During Second Step, students are shown a picture card and we discuss how the different characters in the picture are feeling, why they are feeling that way, and what we can do when we have those same feelings or see a friend with those feelings.
