Next Week:
Next week is APPLE WEEK! I am asking that students bring in their FAVORITE kind of apple on Wednesday, October 7. We will sort and graph the apples, we will have a taste test and tally our favorite, and we will end the week making crockpot applesauce. We’ll graph the question, “do you like crockpot applesauce?” I’ll send a reminder email on Tuesday.
Language Arts:
- Here are the Fundations letter/keyword/sounds we have learned so far in unit 1. We are halfway through unit 1 which means I’ve introduced the first 13 letter/keyword/sounds. We also completed the “mid unit assessment” and I’ll share those results with you next week. The kids did AWESOME! We’ll keep moving along in unit 1. Again, the main focus of UNIT 1 in Fundations is knowing the letter names and sounds for A-Z, and the LOWERCASE only letter formation.

- Journaling: We will continue to practice journaling focusing on the following skills: writing words with pencil, drawing detailed pictures with crayons and using lowercase letters only. Once kids start writing with all capital letters, it’s a hard habit to break, so we really focus on using those lowercase letters.
- Shared writing: We will continue shared writing. Each child will be called up to the front and will have a chance to help me write a short “story” following this format: My name is–, I am — years old, I like —, I do not like —-. During shared writing we will practice the following skills: stretching words/writing the sounds we hear, writing word wall words, filling in missing sounds, remembering ‘finger spaces’ in between words, and understanding letters make up words and words make up sentences.
- Fundations printing: We will keep practicing letter formation using the sky, plane, grass and worm lines.
- Birthdays: Be sure to help your child practice reciting his/her birthday!
- Word wall words: Current word wall words: no, yes, the, I, go, we, will, see. Next week I will introduce IS. We will practice both reading and writing these words. See if your child can show you some of these when you’re reading at home!
Math:
Your child will be coming home with his/her first “INTO MATH” workbook. We will be starting our second workbook, which will be all about representing numbers 6-10 with objects, representing 6-10 with a written numeral and comparing numbers to 10. In addition to this, we will continue to work on the following math skills all month long:
- Number writing: Writing numbers correctly using the Fundations lines. Remember, backwards numbers will still happen and are completely developmentally appropriate.
- Tally Marks: We will use tally marks to represent numbers and show “tens” and “ones.”
- Ten Frames: We will use a double ten frame to represent teen numbers and show “tens” and “ones.”
- Counting: We will continue to practice counting by 1s to 30. At Home: Keep practicing that counting! You say a number, they say a number, go back and forth. The car is a great place to do this! The expectation is up to 100 by the END of kindergarten.
- Graphing: We will create and interpret graphs–bar graphs and tally graphs. Next week, our graphing will be all about APPLES!
- Greater than/less than/equal to: We will use the following symbols to compare numbers: >, <, =
Religion/Science:
- We will continue to attend 8am Mass on Tuesdays.
- Next week will be all about CREATION. We will pull out the bible for the first time and will read the story together. We will learn a new pocket chart song that starts like this: God made flowers, God made trees…
- We will begin to explore NONFICTION text by reading books about apples. We will compare nonfiction apple books to fiction apple books and will discuss the differences.
- We will have a taste test next week and will learn about the different kinds of apples including how they grow.
