Halloween and red ribbon week is here! Next week is a very active, fun week in kindergarten. I’ll send reminders!
Language Arts:
The kids did so well naming the different story elements in our read alouds this past week. Next week, we will continue to read both fiction and nonfiction books about pumpkins and Halloween. A fiction book we label as “from the imagination” whereas nonfiction books, “give us facts or information.” We will continue to name the characters (people, animals or things in a book), setting (where and when the story takes place), problem and solution (how do the characters solve the problem?) in books we read.

- Journaling: We are working on writing words with a pencil, drawing pictures with a crayon. We are learning that when we put words together it makes a sentence. We need ‘finger spaces’ in between our words and a ‘stop sign’ at the end. We are writing “I see” and “I like” sentences. Use this same language at home when you’re helping your child write notes, make cards, etc.!
- Write the room: The ‘write the room center’ changes throughout the year and now students are writing “I see the ___” sentences which are posted throughout the room labeling different items. What are students practicing during this activity? Writing with lower case letters, understanding letters make words and words make sentences, and practice of our word wall words, I , see, the. Plus, students get to move around the room with their clipboards which is great for young bodies which are meant to MOVE!
- Word wall word booklets: When your child comes home with a printable word wall book, please help your child practice reading that booklet to “three lucky listeners.” That could be a grown-up, sibling, stuffed animal, a grandparent on the phone, etc. The purpose of these word wall/high frequency word books is to practice word wall word/high frequency word recognition (the words that are highlighted), left to right tracking and to build CONFIDENCE. They are READERS!
- Shared writing: We will continue shared writing. Each child will be called up to the front and will have a chance to help me write a short “story” following this format: My name is–, I am — years old, I like —, I do not like —-.
- Fundations printing: We will keep practicing letter formation using the sky, plane, grass and worm lines.
- Guided writing: We will complete our first class book next week with a guided writing page that says, “I am going to be ______ for Halloween.” Students will write the words and illustrate their pictures. We will collect their pages and turn it into a class book that they can pull and read on their own!
- Word wall words: Current word wall words: no, yes, the, I, go, we, will, see, is, to, a, my. Next week I will introduce AND, DO. We will practice both reading and writing these words. See if your child can show you some of these when you’re reading at home!
Math:
We are about halfway through our second math workbook which is all about representing numbers 6-10 with objects, representing 6-10 with a written numeral and comparing numbers to 10. In addition to this, we will continue to work on the following math skills all month long:
- Number writing: Writing numbers correctly using the Fundations lines. Remember, backwards numbers will still happen and are completely developmentally appropriate.
- Tally Marks: We will use tally marks to represent numbers and show “tens” and “ones.”
- Base Ten blocks: We are now using base 10 blocks to represent numbers greater than 10. This is another way we will practice those very tricky teen numbers!
- Ten Frames: We will use a double ten frame to represent teen numbers and show “tens” and “ones.”
- Counting by 1s: We will continue to practice counting by 1s, now up to 50! Keep practicing at home. We like to pat our laps as we count and CLAP each time we get to a new group of ten.
- Counting by 10s: Next week, I will introduce counting by 10s to 100! Practice at home too!
- Graphing: Next week, we have a couple of graphs we’ll be creating and interpreting including our candy corn sorting and graph page and Halloween graph page.
- Greater than/less than/equal to: We will use the following symbols to compare numbers: >, <, =
Religion/Science:
- We will continue to attend 8am Mass on Tuesdays.
- Next week will continue our unit on FEELINGS. God cares how we feel–when we are happy, sad, angry. He always cares and asks US to care about how others are feeling too! The feeling we will focus on next week is the feeling of being afraid. This is a perfect time for this part of the religion unit with Halloween happening at the end of the week.
