Octubre de Calabazas

Dear DLI Families,

We had another wonderful week of learning in DLI! Our little learners continued building their Spanish language skills through phonics, music, math, and exciting hands-on activities. We are so proud of their enthusiasm and the progress they continue to make each day!

¡La letra P!

This week, we focused on la letra P and the sound it makes. We practiced combining the letter P with our five vowels, A, E, I, O, U, to create syllables such as pa, pe, pi, po, and pu.

We also discovered that many Spanish words begin with the letter P! We connected our learning to our Zoo-Phonics friends, Piwi el Pingüino, and explored words such as pollitos and pío. Our students enjoyed listening for the p sound and discovering new words that begin with our letter of the week! We had a very special classroom experience this week! Our students had the opportunity to pass around a Kiki Chickie stuffie, a beloved character from our favorite YouTube channel, Canticos. This exciting activity allowed our little learners to connect a familiar character they enjoy with the Spanish vocabulary and songs we practice in the classroom. It was such a fun way to bring our learning to life!

We continued practicing our daily Heggerty phonemic awareness activities. Through repetition, songs, and listening games, our students are strengthening their ability to hear, recognize, and play with the sounds in words. We are so proud to see our students becoming more comfortable participating and responding during our daily practice. Every little step helps build a strong foundation for future reading skills! Our song of the week was Estrellita, ¿dónde estás?”, the Spanish version of  “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” We enjoyed singing together while practicing Spanish vocabulary, listening skills, and pronunciation. Music is a wonderful way to help our little learners develop their language skills while having fun!

¡La figura y el color de la semana!

Our shape of the week was el óvalo, and our color of the week was el anaranjado o naranja! We practiced identifying these concepts in our classroom and connecting them to the world around us. Our students are continuing to build their Spanish vocabulary as they learn to recognize, name, and describe different shapes and colors.

¡Todo sobre las calabazas!

This week, we also began learning all about las calabazas! We explored our pumpkin theme and ended our Friday with a fun, creative activity. Our students made their very own jack-o’-lanterns using paper plates, which they painted anaranjado.

We aren’t finished with our pumpkin fun just yet! We will continue our calabaza exploration on Monday with a special pumpkin activity. Our students will have the opportunity to cut open a real pumpkin and explore its texture and what it feels like inside. This hands-on experience will allow them to use their senses, practice descriptive vocabulary in Spanish, and discover more about this seasonal favorite!

We can’t wait to see their curiosity and excitement as we continue exploring ¡las calabazas!

This week, we had our very first Mystery Reader in DLI! We were so excited to welcome a special guest into our classroom to share the joy of reading with our little learners. Experiences like these help foster a love of books, encourage listening and language development, and make reading even more exciting for our students. A huge thank you to our Mystery Reader for helping us make this special classroom moment possible! We look forward to more wonderful reading adventures with our DLI families.

¡Que tengan un maravilloso fin de semana y nos vemos el lunes para seguir aprendiendo!
