- Here are the Fundations letter/keyword/sounds we have learned so far in unit 1. Remember, we are focus on LOWERCASE formation ONLY, and want students to be able to name the letters and sounds in the “letter/keyword/sound” format as shown below:

- Name writing: We’re just about at the point where writing with one capital letter, the rest lower case and starting at the correct lines is becoming automatic. Yay!
- Journaling: Next week we will start journaling in kindergarten! Students each have a journal with space to draw a picture and space to label that picture. At the beginning, it’s very much teacher guided. We will practice together drawing DETAILED pictures and the skill of “stretching” or “writing the sounds we hear” in words. For example, if we are writing “ball” for “b words”, we will stretch it together and write, “b-o-l”. Correct spelling will come as the children move through the Fundations program and their phonics knowledge increases. Right now, we want to focus on those letter/sound relationships and building CONFIDENT kindergarten writers.
- Shared writing: We started shared writing in kindergarten. Each child will be called up to the front and will have a chance to help me write a short “story” with the following format: My name is–, I am — years old, I like —, I do not like —-. During shared writing we will practice the following skills: stretching words/writing the sounds we hear, writing word wall words, filling in missing sounds, remembering ‘finger spaces’ in between words, and understanding letters make up words and words make up sentences. The kids love a chance to talk about themselves and of course, using smelly markers always helps! 🙂
- Fundations printing: Your child will come home with his/her first printing packet next week. Again, getting that formation down is so important. Not only does it help students better learn their letters and sounds, but automaticity with letter formation helps when we start to put letters together to make words. Remember, we use the terms: ‘sky’, ‘plane,’ ‘grass,’ and ‘worm’ lines at school. Try using those at home too!
- Birthdays: Ask your child about his/her birthday. We are working on reciting our birthdays!
- Word wall words: Current word wall words: no, yes, the, I, go. Next week, we will add WE, WILL. We will practice both reading and writing these words. See if your child can show you some of these when you’re reading at home!
Math:
Next week we will be continue our “Into Math” workbook focusing on numbers up to 5. In addition to this, we will continue to work on the following math skills all month long:
- Number writing: Writing numbers correctly using the Fundations lines. Remember, backwards numbers will still happen and are completely developmentally appropriate.
- Tally Marks: We will continue to practice counting a group of objects and tallying up to 10. “1, 2, 3, 4, 5 MAKES A BUNDLE!” (FINGER SPACE) “6, 7, 8, 9, 10 CIRCLE IT UP!”
- Ten Frames: We will continue to practice those tricky teen numbers. We recognize teen numbers as “a group of TEN with some ONES left over.” 11, 12, 13 and 15 are always the tricky ones. We’ll keep practicing! - Counting: Next week we will start counting by 1s to 30. At Home: Keep practicing that counting! You say a number, they say a number, go back and forth. The car is a great place to do this! The expectation is up to 100 by the END of kindergarten.
- Graphing: We will create and interpret graphs–bar graphs and tally graphs.
Religion: Next week we will learn about the following things in our church: holy water (reminds us of our baptism!), tabernacle, the candle that is always lit (and reminds us of Jesus), holy family statue and altar. We will practice genuflecting and showing reverence in church.
We will begin to attend 8am Mass on Tuesday, September 22nd. On Mass days our doors will open at 7:45am so we can get unpacked, use the bathroom and be in church by 8am. You’re always welcome to join us at 8am Mass. We sit with our 8th grade buddies who will give us reminders about sitting, standing, kneeling, hands folded, etc.
We had our first PBIS ticket draw on Friday! Ask your child who the big winner was. I wonder who it will be next ticket draw day!? SO many respectful, responsible and compassionate behaviors being displayed in kindergarten. There were A LOT of tickets in our tub! Way to go kinder-cardinals!
