This Week:
This week we had three safety drills this week, fire, tornado and bus evacuation. Next week will be the lockdown. All have gone just fine!
We wrapped up our first iReady inform assessment (previously called the diagnostic). Students will now begin their “learning paths.”
I finished my beginning of the year assessments with each student. This allows me to see what we need to work on with each child. I asked them about: letter names and sounds, number writing 1-10, number recognition 1-20, color names, 2d shape names, name writing, counting by 1s and counting a group of objects with 1-1 correspondence.

- Next week is FALL FEST week. Returning families know this means drop-off and pick-up are affected for the full week. Please refer to the directions in my email and thank you in advance for your patience with the outside disruption. Inside the building, it’s a regular school week. 🙂
Language Arts:
- Here are the Fundations letter/keyword/sounds we have learned so far in unit 1:

- Name writing: we will continue to work on writing our names with ONE capital letter, the rest lower case and will use the fundations lines.
- Students have learned about their “initials.” Ask your child about his/her initials! Sometimes instead of writing our names, students will be asked to write their initials.
- Word wall words: no, yes, the: look for these words in books at home! We will practice reading and writing these words.
Math:
We started our very first “INTO MATH” workbook. Each workbook contains a certain number of “modules” or chapters. Module 1 all about: counting and sequencing numbers to 5. In addition to this, we will continue to work on the following math skills all month long:
- Number writing: We are focusing on number formation for the following numbers this past week and next week: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Click HERE to see the poems that go along with each number. In kindergarten we spend a lot of time focusing on how to form each number. By doing this, it will really help the kids when we get more into manipulating numbers–comparing, adding, subtracting, etc. The kids won’t be so distracted by trying to figure out HOW to write the numbers, but instead can focus on the actual concept. At home: Ask your child to show you how to make a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. These are the numbers we’ve practiced so far.
- Tally Marks: We will continue to practice counting a group of objects and tallying up to 10. “1, 2, 3, 4, 5 MAKES A BUNDLE!” (FINGER SPACE) “6, 7, 8, 9, 10 CIRCLE IT UP!” Next week, we will begin to tally numbers greater than 10, up to 20.
- Ten Frames: We are learning to quickly recognize amounts on a ten frame up to 10. We are representing numbers using counters on a ten frame up to 10. We have only worked with numbers 1-10, but next week, we will begin working with a double ten frame to start to practice those very, very tricky teen numbers! - Counting: Counting by 1s to 20. At Home: Keep practicing that counting! You say a number, they say a number, go back and forth. The car is a great place to do this! The expectation is up to 100 by the END of kindergarten. We are counting to 20 right now.
Religion: Next week we will start “I am special to my family.” We feel God’s love through our families! Take some time to complete the house page I sent home so your child can see just how special his/her family is.
SPRINKLE kindness stickers: We are making kindergarten and all of St. Cletus is a little sweeter by trying to sprinkle kindness wherever we go. If your child comes home with a kindness/sprinkle sticker, ask what he/she did to earn it! Next week, we will kick of PBIS with our first PBIS assembly. We will transition to students earning tickets when they show one of our 3 cardinal values: respect, responsibility or compassion. These tickets will be pulled every other Friday for a PBIS prize.
